Chacaltaya is the world’s highest ski-resort and it’s only 40km from La Paz. The ski season is from November until March but the resort facilities are basic and the slope becomes shorter every year due to glacial retreats. The main reason to visit the mountain is for the near 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. From the resort you can climb the relatively easy 500 metres to the peak in about 30mins and at the top you’ll see the imposing peak of Mt Illimani (6439m) with La Paz and El Alto at its feet.

CHACALTAYA

Chacaltaya is literally one shaky and steep mini-bus ride away from El Alto and up the arduous Mount Chacaltaya. The bus takes you to the base of Mount Chacaltaya, the snow capped mountain and home of the worlds highest ski-lift.
