Origins of the Largest Salt Lakes in the World

The Salt Lakes in the south of Bolivia are the largest in the world covering around 9 000 km2. They are, however, not lakes in the traditional sense of the word. Their surface in the dry season comprises of a thick crust of salt (10-20 cm) that can easy support a car. Beneath this crust the earth is saturated with moisture. As the top layer dries, it forms cracks that draw up the moisture creating the myriad of surface patterns that characterise the area.
