MERCADO RODRIGUEZ

Go for: Fresh produce
Where to find it: Calle Rodriguez
Best days to go: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday

Though Calle Rodriguez is buzzing everyday with vendors selling every fruit and vegetable that could possibly spring to mind, and more besides, the best time to go is at the weekend. Get there as early as eight in the morning to pick up the freshest produce possible, as by Sunday afternoon it is already beginning to empty. This is undoubtedly the best and cheapest food market in La Paz. It feels like every colour of the rainbow is represented on these streets. The vibrant shades of the shiny red and green peppers, bananas, oranges and apples contrast with the browns and greys of sacks of potatoes, wheat, cereals and pasta all in rows as far as the eye can see. As well as fruit and vegetables, El Mercado Rodriguez is the place to buy fresh fish from Lake Titicaca and seafood from Peru. Do not be at all surprised when men carrying huge animal carcasses brush past you on their way to the covered stalls where most of the meat is sold. This market is perhaps the best place to observe the street life and the workings of a busy, functioning market. Men and women walk along practically doubled over with the colossal weight of potatoes or onions wrapped securely in shawls on their backs. Women nurse their children and the vendors eat their lunch of rice and meat from the pavement as they sell their wares.
