Down by the river
The Rio Pirai on the outskirts of Santa Cruz is certainly THE place to hang out on a hot afternoon.
On arrival it looks like a dirt track with not a lot going for it. However, after some investigation, it will become clear that this dirt track lined on both sides by huge numbers of drinking dens and music shacks. It’s a great place to hang out with mates, have a bite to eat, down some beers and eye up the local talent.
The young and trendy come down here to show off their cars, blast out their favourite tunes and just be seen driving around. If, however, all the noise and dust gets too much at the far end of the track, you can take the road down to the riverbank.
The river itself is a hive of activity with groups of children playing games and throwing mud, whilst their parents sit around drinking their beers in the river. I must admit, however, that I was not tempted to leave my sunny spot on the bank, due to the rather unfortunate brown colour of the water flowing past my feet.
The sunset and beers kept me satisfied, though, and the whole experience was thoroughly entertaining.
Getting there: Micros 6 and 9, plus taxis.
When to go: Any afternoon or early evening, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the most popular days.
