Ramiro Portugal and Tildy own this little spot of paradise where you can camp or stay in one of the comfortable rooms. Pumas have been spotted on the grounds where cows roam freely – check the swimming pool before diving in! You can take a 4 hour tour of the reserve and look out for capuchin monkeys, agoutis, squirrels, possums and big cats. If you’re not staying there call ahead to let Tildy know to prepare her fabulous home-cooked, fresh meals and don’t forget to try her wonderful home-made ice cream and fruit-based shakes.
A one hour walk out of the village to take in spectacular views – ask Guillermo at the Hotel Huayrani for directions or company.
Go down the main road to the river for a dip in cool, clear waters and a spot of butterfly watching.
Carry on from the bridge up left and follow the stages of the cross to a small square with a church in which you’ll find a beautiful gold altar and canopy. The locals make a pilgrimage to the statue of Jesus (Señor de la Exaltación) on 14 September.
It takes around 30 minutes by taxi (Bs. 50) to this pretty little, well-kept village whose sanctuary is their pride and joy.

Leave Irupana and cross the Río Puri to Chicaloma, the main home of the Afro-Bolivian population. Try to get there for 27 May to dance saya on the town’s annual feast day.
Coming back to Chulumani and before crossing the Río Solacama come through the tiny village of Ocabaya and have a look at one of the oldest churches in Bolivia. (Bs. 50 by taxi)
TARAPARI BOTANICAL GARDEN AND ORGANIC COFFEE FARM
A 15 minute walk from Chulumani takes you to this lush botanical garden and organic coffee farm where you can experience the agricultural and biological diversity of this eco-region.
Check out the museum and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee on the porch of the house whilst taking in the views.
