You are in: Sorata

If you’ve been stuck in La Paz for days and fancy getting into the country, Sorata may give you the rural respite you’re looking for.

Though famed as a starting point for adventurous treks through the surrounding area, Sorata also offers walking routes in its immediate surroundings that are more forgiving of inexperienced hikers. The movement of locals between their fields has patterned the area with well-trodden trails and an easy stroll from the village centre is quickly repaid with views and lush countryside.
The gradients and the stony ground may make you appreciative of sturdy trainers or boots but otherwise little equipment is needed. In fact the gentle slope of the land also provides a useful means of getting bearings for walkers not equipped with a map or a good sense of direction.

For those who like the feeling of having ‘got somewhere’ there are two more established walks. Leading down out of the town is the popular trail to the Gruta San Pedro (three hours each way) whilst in the opposite direction, requiring about five hours to climb there but considerably less to get back, is the rewarding hike to the old settlement of Sorata, now superseded by its present-day namesake.

 ...to visit Sorata
1) 22km leisurely walk to the San Pedro cave
2) Set off from here to climb Illampu (6368m)
3) The sacred Lake Chilata, unexplored by foreigners before 1995
